R/C Evolution: R/C For the Masses

About the Hobby

R/C is one of the most interesting hobbies out there. It offers a unique combination of both modeling and piloting a vehicle. One of the simplest forms of this hobby (don't let the word “simple” fool you!) is the remote control car. R/C cars are interesting because they present many opportunities for different types of creativity and skill. Some enjoy making cars that are very accurate models of actual cars that work. Others enjoy designing a car in order to make it one of the fastest cars around. Still others enjoy just driving them. Some in this category have even gone on to race their cars against other enthusiasts' cars. If you enjoy artistic or mechanical hobbies, or both, you might want to look in to R/C cars.

Maintenance and Building

One of the things that many people enjoy about R/C Cars is the ability to play around with the mechanics of the car. You could “soup up” your car by adding performance upgrades and also by just tweaking the parts of the car. Much of an R/C car is very similar to a full-size car, particularly when it comes to the drivetrain. Many enjoy tweaking their cars simply to claim “bragging rights” for having the fastest car on the block, and many find this a critical aspect of racing.

Building/Painting

One of the joys for some people about this hobby is the ability to customize the look of your car in almost any conceivable way. There is a slew of Lexan R/C car bodies to choose from, made by many different manufacturers. These can be painted any way that you imagine, although that's not the only thing that you can customize. You can always add decals, and you can now buy personalized decal sheets that let you print any image of your own onto a decal, using your computer and an inkjet printer. There's really no end to all of the things you can do to make your car “personalized”.

Racing/Driving

Finally, many people enjoy R/C cars because they are a lot of fun to drive. Even more fun is racing them against your friends, or, for big-time racing fans, entering a competition at a local racetrack. There are many different types of cars, and thus different types of tracks to race on, from your regular paved oval to dirt tracks with jumps and crazy hairpin turns. From NASCARR to rally racing to monster trucks, whatever your favorite type of racing is, there's sure to be an R/C equivalent for it.

If this all sounds interesting to you, you might want to consider buying a remote control car. If you want to find out more about this, head on over to my section on Buying a Car.
